The purpose behind that is really so you don't fall into the cycle of crushing your self esteem. At least, if you have fallen off the wagon with a new year's resolution, perhaps you can relook at it and see how and why you failed, and perhaps get back on the bike again.
Given how society has shaped our behaviour and expectations, it's actually easy to see that patience for most people is actually difficult to come by.
Why do we need to be patient when - pretty much - we can have anything we want at our fingertips. For most of human history, you couldn't just flick a switch and get a light or tap an app and get food. I'm actually thankful for these conveniences, but I can also see how it has stolen our patience.
If you look at a baby, a baby doesn't try to walk a few times and then say I guess I'm not cut out for this. Great change doesn't happen after a handful of tries.
More often than not, this is how we approach resolutions.
Patience is an absolute requirement for the attainment of any goal because some things simply can't be rushed or hurried. They need your thought and attention to detail.
Some things just take time and effort on your part. They require a long term commitment and dedication to follow through with a set of actions despite challenges and obstacles that you might face on your journey. And yet because of our instant gratification culture, we continue to look for quick fixes, for shortcuts that will get us to our desired aims.
These things rarely, if ever, work and yet we continue to pursue them out of habit.
Patience is a superpower. It breeds high self esteem and unshakable confidence.
This is what the Word says about it, and why it's essential. "Do not fling away, your fearless confidence for it has a glorious and great reward. For you have need of patient endurance to bear up under difficult circumstances without compromising. So that when you have carried out the will of God you may receive and enjoy to the full what is promised." Hebrews 10:35-36.
So what's your coaching takeaway? Patience isn't about waiting. It's about your attitude. Whilst you wait.
I want to look at why resolutions fail.
