Music artist Lil Nas X shocks the internet by dropping a snippet of a song that he says is from his 'Christian era'.
Posting to X and Instagram Lil Nas X, real name Montero Lamar Hill, shared a 1 minute and 15 second video of him in the streets whilst a song in the background played. The lyrics ask God to 'give me hope when I feel less' and say he's 'calling on my angels'.
Many people in the comments weren't pleased with Hills snippet, saying he was mocking God and for him to repent. Popular Christian vlogger Ruslan commented with a gif which indicated he was not impressed. Some were saying that he needs to 'mock another religion' off the back of the global superstar seemingly poking fun at the faith by bringing a bible to the VMA MTV Music Awards 2023 whilst wearing a dress.
The rapper has repeatedly gotten on the wrong side of Christians. In 2021he released a trainer in partnership with Nike which many dubbed 'Satan Shoes' as they were reportedly made with human blood, and he released a music video where he's shown to be giving the devil a lapdance. It's clear to see why many Christians do not take this song seriously.
However, some jumped to his defence stating that Christians shouldn't be quick to cast the artist down, citing the scripture "he who is without sin cast the first stone" (John 8:7).
Looking at Hills past many may say we can't rule out that this song may be from a genuine place. Montero grew up in a Christian household and although he turned to atheism stated in an interview with XXL Magazine that he was an atheist at one point but was 'becoming more spiritual'. Not only that but his father, R.L. Stafford , is a gospel singer. Hills said n 2021 he was an inspiration to the music artist to pursue this particular career.
Lil Nas was taught by his religious father that being gay was not okay. However, after coming out in 2019, he grew to accept and love his son.
“We have become closer,” Lil Nas told Variety. “I mean especially now because I don’t have anything to hide. It was a shock for him. It’s still the beginning phase. I’m not comfortable bringing a guy around yet.”
Whatever Montero's agenda behind the release of this snippet, let's pray that he uses his platform to glorify God, doesn't mock the faith and can bring people to Christ in Jesus' name amen.
