I Go to the Rock: The Gospel Music of Whitney Houston

One of the most iconic and successful pop stars of all time Whitney Houston had a deep connectionwith gospel music and it played an important role in her career and a lasting legacy. Born into a musical family with strong gospel roots, Houston's gospel legacy can be traced through several key aspects of her life and career. Growing up, Whitney was exposed to gospel music from a young age. She started singing in her church choir as a child and later became a soloist at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. Her early exposure to gospel music influenced both her singing technique and her performance style. Throughout her career, Whitney incorporated gospel elements into her pop songs. Her powerful vocal range and emotive delivery were reminiscent of the raw passion found in traditional gospel music.

Whitney was known for performing at least on gospel song on any of her live performances it was not only a tribute to her upbring but also a testament of faith in God.
Right before her passing in 2012 Witney had expressed her desire to do a gospel project which never came to be while she was still alive. However early this month the project came to life.The 15 track album entitled"I Go to the Rock: The Gospel Music of Whitney Houston"features songs from "The Preacher's Wife" and "The Bodyguard" soundtracks, as well as six never-before-released recordings.The album is accompanied by a documentary special, hosted by Cece Winans, and it showcases 10 of her most memorable gospel performances on TV, including the 1988 American Music Awards.
